McQueen got his breakthrough on TV when he was cast in Wanted Dead or Alive. It premiered in 1958. He took the role of Josh Randall, a bounty hunter, and attracted the attention of the higher-ups. He never worked in television again.

Before he got into acting, McQueen drifted between jobs, taking whatever work he could get. Though he joined the Merchant Marines when he was 16, he abandoned the post and worked in a brothel. He was also a carnival barker, roughneck, and lumberjack.
