The producers of Papillion claimed they couldn’t raise the money to finish the film and stopped production. Three weeks later, McQueen worried that no one would get paid, saying he wouldn’t work unless everyone received their checks. Luckily, the finances got restored.

McQueen had trained with Pat E. Johnson in Tang Soo Do, though most people thought his trainer was Bruce Lee or Chuck Norris. Since Chad, Steve’s son, was a martial artist, too, that could have contributed to the confusion.
