Steve turned down roles in The Sundance Kid and Butch Cassidy because he didn’t want Paul Newman to get the top billing. He was tired of cop films and rejected The French Connection. Likewise, he couldn’t cry on cue and couldn’t be in Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

He turned down many roles, but one eluded him, even though he wanted it. When the First Blood novel was released, he tried to adapt it into a movie. Once it happened, he was “too old,” so Sylvester Stallone got it and became the leader in the Rambo franchise.
