Aside from the danger warnings, authorities also mentioned that they had an idea of what was going on with this hole. It was comforting for the local people to know that this hole wasn’t signaling the end of the world, and that there was some kind of scientific explanation. People wanted to know what it was, how deep it went, and when it was going to stop! There were a lot of questions that needed to be answered.

Authorities would explain to the public that to understand what was going on in the lake, they would need to share some stories about the past. Lake Berryessa wasn’t a natural lake; rather, it was man-made! It was constructed in the 1950’s, and it was built alongside the Monticell Dam. The lake was important to the area, since California has always been notoriously dry and required the lake for its hot climate. So far, this wasn’t making things very clear.
